Exocet Sailing dot com

Some time ago I asked for some feedback on a site I was working on. At the time it was merely a shell with some pictures, now it has some content and structure.

One of the main changes, except the decent amount of information on the site now is the logo change in the header. Basically lots of people didn't understand why there was a cruise missile in the image.

  • It wasn't a cruise missile
  • It was an Exocet missile

The hull of an X-Yacht is shaped like said missile. Anyway this link was lost on a whole bunch of people including some in the sailing community. Also given some negative connotations with affiliating with the military livery from the loony left - a decision was taken to remove the logo.

Anyway, have a mooch around and leave you comments on the site.

    Complete My Album UK

This hit state side a few hours ago, there were some questions about an international role out.

    I just received this e-mail

Looks like it does apply on this side of the pond too. It provides a handy link to "Check Your List of Discounted Albums" which launches iTunes and loads the music store.

Sorted by best selling, it tells me I have 50 Albums available for a discounted price.

I wonder what it judges that against, protected AAC files ? Or my Purchased playlist, because I know I've injected items into the purchased playlist in the past...

What it is interesting to note, this offers only run for a few months. They end here on the 26 June 2007. I can't decide if this offer is all it's cracked up to be. With some pundits saying, you only bought certain tracks because that is all that was decent. In my case only partially true often I buy the single on iTunes because it is cheaper then buy the full album from my local music store.

Others are claiming this is the record industry making Apple run this deal in the hope of pushing up flagging Album sales and that Apple have always supported the single purchase model.

On a quick run round the usual online retailers, I easily found one that was cheaper than the offer iTunes Music Store price and others that came close enough that if you're gonna buy it... you might as well get the whole package old skool bits of plastic too.

    Apple TV in stock

My local Apple store has had Apple TV units for some days now, and I happened to be in last weekend and got the behold a wondrous thing. to demonstrate the usability of the Apple TV, they've got some new toys to help them out.

Two gorgeously lickable Sony Bravia TVs hooked up to a couple of Apple TV units. I didn't get to play just watched staff demo to a few peeps who hadn't heard the word on the street. Apple TV is gonna kick living room entertainment's computing ass. Good play for most people like the iPod it works with both Windows and Mac OS X versions of iTunes.

    Is Macam market share shrinking

One of the items on my version tracker rss feed was the update to macam USB webcam driver software. I was considering that it's about time for macam developers to be putting the chairs up on the tables in their office for maybe the last time soon.

With all but the macpro machines now coming with inbuilt iSights and said iSight included machines positively flying off the shelves macam is clearly going to suffer. With only 282 downloading from version tracker of the latest version, is the game nearly up ?

The news just keeps on coming.

This is what happens when you forget to check your RSS reader for a couple of days.

Then when I get it down to this,

I get an exposé like this...

    Photoshop header image

OK Some comments are coming in, keep then coming. I'll fess up here - I have never actually created anything in Photoshop. So I'm kind of learning as I go, I rather like the idea of roughing up my header image so for now I've added in a rugged coffee stain.

I added this in a ridiculously easy, some might say cheating - I googled for coffee stains and found a link to these photoshop brushes. The next task was to learn how to install new brushes. The answer was actually pretty simple.

Opinions on a new header graphic

OK so pretty much my first full foray into Photoshop. I'm a big fan of this effect I've used it in some presentations.

Some advertising / marketing type people may say that it alludes to an old technology, a pre digital age and that is delivering the wrong message. I don't care, I like the effect.

As such, please receive my first attempt at a redesigned header graphic.

Let me know what you think in the comments. PLEASE.

    David Cameron Notes

Just to point out that I took all my notes today in my trusty Moleskine.

I'm using it a fair ole bit now and for more than just shopping lists. Still not written on the front page. I felt like quite the Journo making notes taking pictures all for my blog that no one reads except people I could show the pictures to and tell about the speech in person.

    Oh well c'est la vie.

    Fingers crossed... Northern Ireland deal

Some said this would never happen. Some say it might never last. Maybe just maybe, lets all keep our fingers crossed shall we.

These two man are now preparing for government, together.

David Cameron, Social Responsibility and the launch of the Youth Task Force.

Now we stand for social revival

    Introduced by David Willetts,

    David Cameron

David began leveraging the 70s and 80s Tories in their fight against the Unions and the rampant economic problems, contrasting to 21st century Tories and their fight against rampant social problems including "rampant crime" then quoting some of the UNICEF report (Available here as pdf) that shocked the UK by calculating out of the 21 richest countries, we have the 19/21 lowest score for educational well-being and material well being. With the lowest, 21/21 subjective well being, the most unhappy children.

Some choice quotes from the launch of the youth task force were,
on the subject of instigating social change and creating social responsibility it "is a job for everyone"

On the work / life divide he suggests that if we're harming our families and our relationships with our children then we must "change our working habits"

In response to home care for children of working parents, he'd "Audit the entire welfare system" and allow "care policies that include extended families" not simple mandating that child care allowances must be used at registered care practitioners. He made excellent use of himself as an example saying that he has small children and as a working father he wouldn't know what to do without the support of his parents with some child care. He alluded to making absent fathers properly responsible for their children in a better fashion that the CSA ever did, cutting a cheque simply isn't good enough.

Since this was also the launch of the local authority manifesto he implicated the local councils in the collective responsibility "locals authorities have a big role to play"

Most interestingly for me as a technologist David used violent video games as a very good example of a need for social responsibility. Alluding only briefly to the art imitating life versus life imitating art debate and not wanting to wield the large state legislation and laws about such games. David said that the designer should exercise some responsibility when making the creative work, then moving on to the fashion industry that he accused of "sexualising" young people. Claiming that some companies are treating 12-16 year olds as fully sexual being, this made me think of this educational blog post from pepperpot.

    Finally he took questions:
-A return of the assisted places scheme
-Was the removal of punch and judy politics a good thing
    -Improve aspirations and social mobility
-Disparities in funding from local authorities in response from a newly federated school governor.

All in all a good speech, he impressed the people I was with, although our pretty liberal row seemed to be nodding far more than the rest of the room who are supposed to be his vanguard. It was apparent from that the herculean task he has ahead of him in moving this aged party to the centre ground even with his quite agreeable message of social responsibility.

The reason I mention who was on my row is that they were all politics students and often have a definite liberal slant - yet they could be seen nodding away. In contrast to the lady with the blue rinse a row in front who positively shrieked when it was mentioned that a struggling school and a very successful school had federated - she clearly is happy in her walled garden. Pity not everyone can get in.

What was interesting to note was how engaged the Shadow minister for Schools was with the students on my row when he discovered they were students of politics he seemed genuinely interested in fact I definitely heard someone say "He seemed really.... (clearly struggling to say it in reference of a Tory)... nice"

My club is not about drinking

Well not only drinking just now we have organised for some students to hear david cameron speak on monday. Before we were discussing an open wireless and later important aspects like whether to have chicken or lamb.

    Apple TV Done and dusted

Here tells you how to add more codecs to your Apple TV. It takes all of some fiddling with the rather useful codec pack perion, a pack I've had on my delicious for a good few weeks now. Hacking the Apple TV took all of a week. Gotta say I still can't afford one but this would make me consider a purchase now if I had the moola.

Also consider hard drive up grades are all over the web, this means the majority of your collection of movies can now be played on the Apple TV as well as probably stored on it.

    My mint logo

So far only 62 people have voted which makes me feel kinda special.

Get my vote because it doesn't have a $ symbol, I think this product could go international so I am helping them not limit their market, this was a failing of zvents.com web app. It fails in any other English speaking country outside of north america because we don't pronounce 'Z' as Zee it's Zed, as in "Zed's dead baby, Zed's dead"

This became a much larger issue in my old Digtial signal processing lectures taught by an American who was at ECS, she moved to, Yale apparently.

Anyway, the current results are here.

Update I'm not saying you can vote, although if you sign up for the beta at my mint you've got as much chance as me. I was merely drawing attention to the issue some web apps have when they limit them selves to a particular geographical location by simply choosing the wrong logo or even pronunciation for their new super cool app.

You can see the other logos here, but you might need a password to get in, which I'm not at liberty to give out.

PS3 European Launch, my first look.

Budget 2007... Gordon's one more thing

Dropping the basic rate is a cute move don't get me wrong and his reveal at the end that was almost Jobs' esque.

Lest not forget this is the man who whilst introducing the lowest basic rate in the history of the country also heads up the highest overall tax burden in decades.

In fact his abolishing the lowest 10p tax will in fact spread the differential between the richest and the poorest by taking more than ever out of the lowest paid's pockets, bearing in mind the smoking demographic is also some of the lowest paid people so that's another 11p per 20 cigs.

According to some calculations the abolition of the lowest rate with the decrease of the basic rate will cause a net loss of £4.3 billion and that is to the lowest paid.

Whilst the drop in VAT on nicotine patches is certainly laudable lest not forget this is only for a year, but it does coincide with the new smoking ban.

    More later.

    Ralph Emerson

You might have to suffer through a literary slant for a bit, I am surrounded by my many many beautiful books again and I chanced to pluck my copy of "English Traits" from my shelf, haplessly flicking from page to page I spotted this wondrous paragraph again:

"Machinery has been applied to all work, and carried to such perfection, that little is left for the men but to mind the engines and feed the furnaces." Ralph Waldo Emerson

It made me smile. Are we still merely minding engines ? Do we merely answer the call of some machined bell or whistle, must dash - an e-mail's just arrived.

    10.4.9 Update results

Well, iSync now contains inbuilt support for my SE K800i. The other main improvement I've noticed on my MBP fixes something that's niggled me for AGES. I never took this as a fault but rather a degree of millage may vary. However previously when I turned the volume down to anything below 4-5 bars on the volume control. I pretty much had to hold my head next to the speaker grills to hear ANYTHING.

Now however I can comfortably go down to one bar and still hear my silly American shows.

Godaddy ruins my day, musingsonamac offline

I spent most of the day trying to get through to various support systems at GoDaddy. Firstly musingsonamac.com e-mail stopped responding. Then I couldn't publish a blog post. Then I couldn't upload some pictures from imagewell. Then I couldn't even load musingsonamac.com. At on point I couldn't even load help.godaddy.com

Finally a semi service status page told me this...

FTP access came back about an hour ago, but the site still wouldn't load and blogger.com couldn't ftp material to the server.
It all sorted itself about ten minutes ago, mail coming back online first.

As I noticed it was back, NewsFire bleeped at me and offered me this as scant explanation.

    Six Nations England France

The dying minutes, England just opening up a decent lead against France. A bell sounds, a fire evacuation is ordered. The crowd are left with watching the end of the match through the window... England won though.

    Left handed mousing

I found this here and was intrigued by the left handed mousing. I know many left handed people in my field, I imagine it is something to do with the problem solving creative waffle that we're supposed to be talented in.

    The comment on the picture:
    "Actually...
While I am naturally left-handed, I have always used only my right hand to mouse with. But Yahoo's ergonomics class strongly recommended to try switching. (ask me if you want me to convince you why left-handed mousing is better ergonomically). My boss had done it and said it wasn't too hard... so when I got my keyboard tray I decided to try it and it was a pretty easy switch, I like it now. Too bad my personal mouse at home is a right-handed only mouse. So I guess you can call me an "ambi-mouser"."

Caused me to search out this Mr. Freo and thanks to the wonders of the web I found him and picked his brains on this left handed ergonomic thing. He was conginial in his response and I asked could I repost it here with full attribution and he agreed.

Up until now I'd always considered being a left handed computer user a distinct advantage, I could make notes as a browsed around doing research. Everyone else has to stop move the mouse get the pen pad then make the notes etc. I just write as I'm going along. My next concern was I spent rather a lot of money on a pretty nice Microsoft Bluetooth IntelliMouse. I know I know it's not cool to like MS. However I've always said they do some stuff very well. When it comes to hardware that's 360s and Mice. I actually bought this mouse after I began using my Mac Book Pro as my main machine, in the office I just wanted to open it and go. Not have an extra cable trailing around, on top of the Network, Power etc. Anyway it's always easier to clear the decks when needed if peripherals are wireless.

As you can see from the picture, this mouse is VERY much geared for right handed use, I use all the extra buttons for various exposé features. In light of all these questions and thoughts, here are Mr. Freo's thoughts.

While I do write left-handed, I always have moused right-handed (and that is still the most natural thing for me). Even when mousing right-handed, I've never found a significant need to write at the same time as mousing... so that is kind of irrelevant for me.

The basic reason for switching to left-handed is because it'd ergonomically better for you when your keyboard is placed properly. The "middle" of the keyboard, the "g" and the "h" keys should be directly placed centered in front of you (rather than the literal middle of the keyboard"). On the vast majority of keyboards, doing this will put the number pad on the right even further away. Then, if you put the mouse even further to the right from there, it puts a lot of unnecessary strain on you.

Mousing with the left is an alternative which isn't too hard to get used to, it only took me a few days. For me, I have a non-symmetrical mouse for personal use too, so I still mouse right-handed with that. But when I was at work I would mouse left-handed. The result is that it would give my right hand a break for most of the day.

I do like the balancing idea of the g and h being central to body position. I certainly intend to give it a go with my symmetrical wired, again Microsoft, mouse when I move my desk around next.

Sort out your podcasts... trash the old ones

I am a hoarder. I hoard and I hoard. I have only ever once referd back to an old poscast. That wasn't to watch the entire thing again. No. It was to find out the name of a mouse mat featured in one thirty second segment. Despite this reality I insist on keeping for ever and a day all my old podcasts.

It was getting unacceptable. So I decided to change my iTunes settings to discard my old episodes when I have listened to them.

Changing this saved me an instant 9 gigs. I could save more but I'm dreadfully behind on many of my larger podcasts. The irony there is that most of these are news based and by now are completely out of date.

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm blogging like mad, because the situation of articles, photos snapshots and links on my desktop was getting untenable. I decided to simply sit down for 90 minutes and get the bulk uploaded and delete my copies. As Linus allegedly said "Only wimps use tape backup: real men just upload their important stuff on ftp, and let the rest of the world mirror it."

    Modern Energy Policy

I found this on a forum, I took a snapshot of it for some reason, but it escapes me right now. Other than I don't think this is exactly conceptualising the big picture. Isn't the sentiment lovely though.

Keychain password analysis of old and current passwords

I was discussing with a colleague the need for a new password on the admin account. Whilst tossing a few ideas around I decided to wield the power of the mac keychain and as it for suggestions as well as compute the relative strength of some of ours, including the current password.

Apparently this is a suggestion / default in some MS training kit,

An old password at an old place of work,

Another old password on an admin account,

The current password for the admin user,

A suggestion of a memorable password from keychain... no I've not used it anywhere so don't bother trying,

Plant a tree... buy a dell

I was lead to this picture by a report on Fake Steve. To be honest, I rather think good on dell for this one. Well done them... still wouldn't buy one, but maybe my preferred hardware supplier could consider this as an option...

    Using Exchange online Web interface

I thought that was quite a nice reminder. I promptly changed my password like a goodboy.

Weird news bug on Google News

Just what I need to know.

    Newsfire RSS reader

Ages ago I got a license for the RSS reader NewsFire. It came as part of the macheist bundle. I had put off using it as I couldn't find any documentation about export my many many many RSS feeds from Safari to NewsFire.

The other night I decided to load up a couple manually and have a mooch around the program. Turns out I quite liked it... so then I just pondered copying my bookmarks from Safari to NewsFire... turns out it is even easier... I just needed to drag them over.

What's the pop up you see just after I've moved them over ? Well that is allowing NewsFire to access a keychain login for one of my subscription based feeds.

How ridiculously simple was that. Since then I've enjoyed using NewsFire very much.

    Time breakdown of Web Development

I found this gem in amongst Paul Stammatiou's flickr stream. Made me giggle anyway. Despite what one of my colleagues said decrying the W3C and their interference... I think she'd prefer M$ to carry on abusing the standards... you know since they invented the web and all.

I said I'd mention that to Tim when I see him next week at his first lecture to which I have tickets.

    SEC Block Spam Stock Trades

Here is an intelligent way to combat that damn penny stock spam that keeps getting through. It shouldn't stop there... do it twice and the fine should be a months suspension.

School boy error... "I'll just have a look in HMV" Wot ? It was for testing purposes... full screen coverflow...

Thanks to Mr. Phin for reminding me about the timed screen capture in Grab on my mac. So a Quicksilver "Grab" later and I have a ten second delay on my screen capture.

Yes yes it looks very cool... and yes I am guilty of doing a bit of impression management with the albums I'm showing you. Counting crows, I've liked for ages. This Miles Davis chap I bought my first album when in San Francisco last year and asked a friend for a recommendation on what to buy next he said I "had" to buy Kind of Blue. So when I was out shopping today, I decided I'd just wonder in HMV... three albums later and I have new things to show off in full screen cover flow. I still don't think it's functional on my laptop. I'm telling you some Wii like controller on an iMac that would be super cool.

The weather here was ridiculously gorgeous for early march and even more so given the down pours we'd experienced over the last week and weekend.
Quick spot check.. which of these pictures do you think is best ? I will reveal which is mine and which is on auto later.

Whilst in town I tried to be a bit arty, what do you think ?

    New iTunes 7.1

There is my much under used coverflow... see the new icon (Bottom right) that expands the Coverflow Experience to full screen... yeah it looks cool, but why would I use this. I scrolled like butter. Nice and snappy over my 12 gigs of music.

Unfortunately my presentation remote provided with my macbook pro doesn't control coverflow. It jumps tracks etc, so when you reach the end of an album it'll flip over. I know holding down fast forwards... I just wanted an extra mode... in an almost Wii like fashion to flick my wrist and have my album covers go slipping by... That would look cool at a party... but that's all.

I can't provide a full screen shot because my +Shift+4 isn't giving me my standard screen capture and I can't be bothered hunting around for a timed screen capture app.

    iTunes updates and Quicktime to...

I see in my new feed reader... and lo and behold up pops Software Update...

What does it claim, full screen cover flow... whoopie doo. I really don't see the attraction with cover flow. Now maybe on a large screen iPod I can see the metaphor to flicking through your deck of CDs on that screen.. but against a full fledged iTunes with play lists and superior sorting options (Another thing incidentally to receive an update in this 7.1.5) I just don't ged it.

Speaking of sorting options I believe Apple have messed up the standard behaviours of the datagrid in iTunes library. All manner of weird and wonderful things happen if you click on a column, not just sort ascending and descending like every other app out there with columns but where you click, what word you click what symbol you click. I only found any of this out frantically trying to sort my tracks my album in simply album order... not f'ing Album by Date and other such nonsense.

A TUAW here tries to portray it all in a positive way as is there whim... but trust me many minutes of me huffing and puffing at my iTunes about this only a few weeks ago.

The new Quick time has some Security and bug fixes, wonder if any of them placate that nice chap over at Month apple bugs that weren't even all Apple bugs but effected everyone

Anyway, on with the update... lets see if I can spot a difference.

Answer your mobile please. Future of Web Apps Carson Media

I simply must share this anecdote with you. Last night I was sat in my comfy chair, tapping away and chatting to someone on skype. My telephone was across the room living on silent as it does, much to the discombobulation of my boss. Anyway, I'm chatting away on skype and then an e-mail hits my inbox. Now I has growl and mail notify which both report on new messages for me... mail notifier gives a larger view of the message and I was able to read the body.

Yes... indeed my phone was ringing, so I got up and answered it. It amused me for several minutes that indeed that the most efficient way to get to speak to me is to simultaneously e-mail me when ringing my mobile. What kind of world do we live in.

I hope to attend this years US Future of Web Apps Summit again, the location for the conference isn't fixed yet so I can vote on where I, as an attendee last year want it to be. The choices are...
    Boston
    Denver
    Miami
    Portland
    Seattle
    Nashville
    Washington DC
    Chicago
    Austin

    Thoughts anyone ?

Update: I have one vote for Chicago by e-mail... anymore for anymore ?

Bad bad computer to computer interloping

If you investigate the picture above you'll notice an ad-hoc network called ISS. This is very bad because the cross campus wireless shows up as ISS. This person is clearly intending that people will connect to their service thinking that it's the cross campus one. Very naughty indeed. I assume once connected this piece of filth perpetrates a man in the middle style attack capturing any data you might chose to send across their interloping network.

I've a good mind to report this to someone, but don't quite know what to do. Of course I could be being completely cynical and this is merely some poor sap who has incorrectly followed the setup instructions and believed they need to rename their network ISS instead of looking for an SSID of ISS.

    Lunar Eclipse

Isn't this fantastic, taken last night during the Lunar eclipse. The spectacle is covered here on wired. Here on BBC.

Parabolic Chinese cookware and airport express

So I had the flat to myself this evening since the other esidents were off performing in an Asian multicultural showpiece that I couldn't get tickets for so couldn't go. I decided that I'd use the fact I wouldn't be disturbing anyone to try and get WiFi in the kitchen. I started by merely moving the airport express from one corner of my room, behind the stereo etc to the furthest plug along.

This with both my room door open and the kitchen door open allowed for fairly decent web browsing and IM'ing. This allowed me to browse and eat pizza for dinner.

Both doors open is not really the best solution so I began looking for alternatives. There was no network connectivity with the doors closed. To be honest the airport couldn't stay there anyway because I need my airtunes and my stereo. However it's always fun to try the problem solving aspect of these things. I found this using the wonders of google.

I just so happened to have a spare Ken Hom unused Wok with me unused clean and fresh.

First of all I tried suspending the Airport express with the use of magic elastic bands...

This didn't work very well so I thought I'd try model 2.0 and use blutack to put the express in the centre of the parabola

Also note the amazing parabola securing device...

This caused a marginally better experience with both doors shut. I could remain connected to the network with the doors closed but browsing was intermittent and horribly slow. Connectivity according to iStumbler was about 18% with the doors open or closed using the Wok. This compares to 12% with no additions to the airport express and the doors open. When I was sat next to the access point signal strength according to iStumbler was maybe 3%-5% more than without the wok.

This is a picture of connectivity whilst in the kitchen doors shut with the airport in the base of the wok.

This is the case with no wok and the kitchen door shut, yes the number claims to be connected at 53% but look at the connectivity graph... no connection. 53% is merely the last recorded value as I entered the kitchen.

Finally after all this time wasting I returned the Airport to the corner of my room from whence it came and hooked back up my stereo and printer.

I think I can manage for the time it takes me to cook and eat a meal... not to be on the internet, maybe.
